I am a graduate of Emily Carr University of Art + Design (formally Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design), majoring in Communication Design. I have worked as a graphic designer for over 20 years. Along the way, I have grown my skills to include prepress, photography, videography/editing and the master of cardboard (yes, that is me inside the lego batsuit).
Every design can be created beautiful but not all design is. As boring as it seems, I like typography and type setting. Nothing annoys me more than seeing widows in paragraphs or poor leading. Don't know what I am talking about? Contact me and I will be glad to explain it to you.
It was my first intern job as a junior designer in 1999. I spent the summer working under some brilliant designers at DNA Productions. We would exchange ideas and I would support their vision, flushing out concepts and ultimately creating graphics they would need. I, and another junior designer was at the bottom of the design food chain, or as she put it, "we are just the small potatoes". The potato project was born out of this. Recognizing that even the smallest details need to be and can be beautiful. When executed correctly, what may be insipid to many will be part of the solution that becomes part of the story being communicated.
I have always enjoyed art in any medium as a child. Creating something out of nothing was the norm. A deck of hockey cards became a coliseum, Lego became an Imperial Walker (this is well before Star Wars licensing deals). My fascination grew as an artist when I discovered Garfield comics. I was in grade 2 when I started to draw just like Jim Davis. Having delusions of grandeur I thought I could be a cartoonist just because I could draw a fat orange cat. Turns out I can't draw anything beyond that feline. Fortunately, I had time to come to that realization in my teens where I experimented with photography, silk screening and ceramics. Trying out different things widened my scope expressing my creativity. I was given the opportunity to publish a monthly newsletter for my church and found that on this platform, I was able to combine many of my interests. That was when my journey began and continues to this day.
